About Belfast (BFS) Airport
Belfast International Airport (BFS) is situated in
Northern Ireland, UK, 6 miles from Antrim and 13.2 miles
northwest of Belfast. It’s the busiest airport in
Northern Ireland and also the second busiest airport on
the island of Ireland. The airport was formerly known as
Aldergrove Airport, after the village from the west
side. The airport is owned by Abertis Company and has
around 4 million passengers/year. Belfast Airport’s
runways are also used by the Royal Air Force base RAF
In 1917 the site for the airport was established to be a Royal Flying Corps training place. After the World War I it remained opened for RAF activity. In 1922 civil traffic began. During the Second World War, the airport remained a RAF base especially for the Coastal Command. In the same period the four runways were replaced by two new longer paved runways in order to host larger, long-range aircrafts. These two runways formed the basis of the ones that still exist today at the airport. In 1963 a new terminal and apron with passenger facilities and a complex were opened. In the 1970s Northern Ireland Airports Limited was established to operate and develop the airport, and thus a major program was contracted. The runways, taxiways and parking apron were improved; a new International Pier, lounge facilities, car parks and an additional apron were built.
In 1994 the airport was privatized and TBI became the new owners. The airport has one terminal serving all destinations. Nowadays the airport is undergoing a 25 years development master plan which started in 2006. Therefore, Belfast (BFS) Airport Hotels invite you to spend a lovely trip in Belfast, UK and enjoy all the fun experiences you may find while we will take care of your accommodation.
